Afia is the Principal Attorney and Founder of Yunus Law, with an office in Philadelphia and Chicago. Her practice focuses exclusively on U.S. Immigration and Nationality Law. She represents clients from all over the country and abroad in employment based immigration, family based immigration, and also in removal defense before the U.S. Immigration Court and Board of Immigration Appeals.

Biography

Mrs. Yunus received her B.A. degrees in Criminal Justice and Political Science at the University of Illinois at Chicago in 2007. She graduated Magna Cum Laude and received Dean’s Honors List distinction every semester.  She earned her J.D. degree, Cum Laude, from Chicago-Kent College of Law in 2010 with a Certificate in Public Interest Law. At Chicago-Kent, she was awarded the CALI award, Dean’s Certificate of Service Award, and was on the Dean’s Honor List. She is admitted to practice law before the Supreme Court of Illinois, the Northern District of Illinois Federal District Court, the Board of Immigration Appeals, and Immigration Courts nationwide.

Mrs. Yunus has obtained approvals for clients applying for PERM labor certification, E-2 Investor Visas, National Interest Waivers, H1b and H2b Visas, L1 Visas and employment-based U.S. Lawful Permanent Residence (“green card”) for foreign nationals ranging from small business employees, student visa holders, and employees of multi-national corporations and educational institutions. Prior to founding Yunus Law, Mrs. Yunus accrued extensive business immigration experience at a well-known local immigration firm in Chicago managing over 200 clients.

Mrs. Yunus also has extensive experience with applications and petitions to USCIS and the Department of State. She has successfully represented clients in applications for naturalization, adjustment of status, change of status and extension of status in business immigration and family immigration matters. This includes applications for fiancé visas, petitions for spouses, children, and siblings of U.S. citizens, Requests for Humanitarian Reinstatement, appeals and Motions to Reopen unfavorable decisions, and much more. Mrs. Yunus also has a vibrant removal defense practice where she represents clients in the U.S. Immigration Court and Board of Immigration Appeals. She has successfully filed on behalf of her clients Motions to Advance, Cancellation of Removal for LPR and non-LPR clients, and Motions to Terminate removal proceedings.

Mrs. Yunus believes in providing a full-service experience to her clients in that she provides a detailed briefing prior to any USCIS or embassy interview, attends interviews with her clients, drafts business plans, letters of recommendation, and forms business entities for her business immigration clients, assists clients in obtaining social security cards and benefits, and more.

She is an active member in good standing of the American Immigration Lawyers Association since 2012, the National Association of Muslim Lawyers, the Illinois State Bar Association.

Mrs. Yunus is actively involved in her community and is passionate about efforts at diversity, inter-faith dialogue, and assisting the immigrant community at large. Mrs. Yunus serves on the Recruitment and Community Outreach Advisory Board for Camden County College and on the Board of Directors at GCLEA, a prominent mosque in Cherry Hill, NJ. She is actively involved in supporting her local refugee community through a partnership with the Catholic Charities of Camden and with Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA) Relief. She serves as an immigration legal advisor to ICNA’s Center of Social Justice (CSJ) justice hotline. She provides free legal advice through regular Facebook LIVE events on Yunus Law’s facebook page and has spoken at numerous institutions throughout South Jersey, including Camden County College, Rutgers University, and various local religious institutions.

(1) “Know Your Rights” – An informative session on the rights of different categories of individuals (immigrants, undocumented immigrants, and US Citizens) in different contexts.

(2) “Immigration under Trump” – Broad range of topics can be discussed, such as: a summary of the Muslim Ban 1.0 and 2.0, an analysis of the effects of the Travel Ban on different categories of immigrants, immigration policy changes, refugee programs, and much more.

(3) “U.S. Immigration 101” – Afia speaks about specific immigration topics tailored to the specific audience. For example, an informative session on the student visa process to high school or undergraduate students, a workshop on seeking U.S. citizenship, or a seminar for Employers on immigration law compliance.
